A: Chevrolet Prizm.

It's essentially a Toyota Corolla with Chevrolet Bowtie badges and a Delco radio. Oh and it's typically $1000 less than a Corolla. It's the same car otherwise.

You might find a 2000-2005 Hyundai Accent in that price range. Hyundai's quality rose dramatically during that time period and I'm certain that the Accent will be more reliable than the Mirage you listed.

94-95 Honda Civic EX Sedan. All EX Sedans have dual front airbags, 4 wheel disc brakes, ABS, moonroof, and a SOHC VTEC engine.

96-98 Mazda Protégé. Get a manual transmission. The Ford sourced automatic is crap. Otherwise it is a solid car

97+ Ford Ranger. You are probably out of the price range for the more powerful DOHC Mazda MZR powered 2.3 Rangers, but the SOHC Lima 2.3/2.5 is a durable engine and should return decent mpg.

98-99 Dodge Dakota. Affordable and the 3.9 V6 is durable. (transmissions are a little sketchy)
